Lakkidi

Located about 30kms from Palakkad, Lakkidi is considered as the gateway to Wayanad district of Kerala. Most of the tourists stop here, on their way to explore the beautiful Wayanad. ''

The highest location in Wayanad, this area gets an impressive amount of rain every year. Lakkidi has the second highest amount of annual rainfall in the world.

The entire region is known for its impressive mountain peaks, dense forests and beautiful cascading streams. Plantations of coffee, pepper and cardamom surrounding the area gives another added attraction to this area. The 12 km long journey from Adivaram to Lakkidi through ghat road with nine hairpin bends amidst thick forests offers panoramic, breath taking views.

Trekking, hiking and camping are the other favorite tourist activities in Lakkidi. Trekers can explore some of the most breathtaking lands. Local guides are available to help and guide the visitors. The equipment is available on rent from the travel operators and tourism department. On the way, one can find waterways, mountain peaks, forests etc. Temples also can be seen along the way as well.

PLACES AROUND LAKKIDI

Pokkot Lake - Pookot Lake, a natural fresh water lake surrounded by evergreen forests and rolling hills is located 3 kms from south of Vythiri town. Pookot Lake is undoubtedly the most beautiful tourist spot in the whole of Wayanad.

Eddakal Caves - Situated on Ambukuthi Hills, Edakkal caves are 10 kilometers from Sultanbathery, in Wayanad district. Formed by a large split in a huge rock, the two natural rock formations represent the world's richest pictographic gallery of its kind.

Chethalayam Waterfalls - Located 12 kms from Sulthan Bathery on the Pulpalli Main Road, are the breathtakingly beautiful Chethalayam Waterfalls.

Pakshipathalam - The Bird Watching Centre Pakshipathalam, located 7 kms north east of Thirunelli Temple in Brahma Giri Hills is a challenging tourist spot. A trekkers' paradise, this place is accessibe only by trekking.

Soochipara Waterfalls - Soochipara Waterfalls is located 22 kms from Hotel Green Gates. On alighting the vehicle, one can reach the waterfalls after a 2-km walk into the dense equatorial forest of Wayanad.

Sulthan Bathery - Located in the hilly eastern part of Wayanad district, 35 km from Lakkidi, Sultan Bathery is a base to explore areas of Muthanga and Eddakal. The place was named after Tipu Sultan who cleared a 14th Century Jain Temple of its idols to store ammunition dump here.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary - Also called as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, it is spread over 334sq.km and is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve since 1973. Located 50 km from Lakkidi, the area is also home to the Adivasis or tribals . In the sanctuary you can spot animals like elephants, sloth bears, guar, sambhars, spotted deers etc.

CLIMATE

The journey to this place is majestic and pleasant with luxuriant forest, lofty peaks and gurgling streams. In Wayanad this is one of the uppermost places where the rainfall is recorded the second highest scale in the world.

HOW TO REACH THERE

Air: The nearest airport is Karipur Airport, 110 kms. The airport is connected to many cities in India including Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai and Airline services are available from Karipur to many gulf countries.

Rail: The nearest railway station is located at a distance of 100 kilometers at Kozhikode which is connected to all major cities of India.

Road: Vythiri is the nearest town which is 5 kilometers away. There are totally nine hairpin bends on the way from Adivaram to Lakkidi along the Ghats road. Drive to Lakkidi an enjoyable experience. Regular KSRTC buses of Kerala and Karnataka connect Lakkidi to other major cities.
