Facts you should know about APJ Abdul Kalam, India's Missile Man

India's great scientist Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam is 82 years old now. He is known as the father of Indian Missile Technology and India's lifelong scientist for his prominent role in India's 1998 nuclear weapons tests. He was born on October 15, 1931.,He was elected as India's 11th President in 2002. During his term as President, he was popularly known as the People's President. Success followed Dr Kalam. Prithvi, Agni, Akash, Trishul and Nag missiles were huge successes.

Here are ten interesting facts to know about this national hero:

1. Kalam is popularly known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology.

2. His father, a humble boat owner, Jainulabdeen, was a devout Muslim and a close friend of the Rameswaran temple priest.

3. Kalam was brought up in a multi-religious, tolerant society; one with a progressive outlook.

4. Kalam used to get up at 4 am, bathe, and then go for his mathematics class, which was taught by a teacher who took only five students in the whole session; and bathing before class was a condition he had laid to all his students.

5. Although Kalam has led several projects in his professional life, he's treated each like his last.

6. The Bharat Ratna was conferred on Dr. Kalam by K. R. Narayanan who was then President of India.

7. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai acted as the mentor and guide of Kalam. He gave Kalam valuable advice on how to always reach for the stars.

8. He used to distribute newspapers after school hours in order to contribute to his father's income

9. When Dr Kalam's first major project SLV 3-failed the first time he was almost shattered.

10. The flight of birds had fascinated him since he was a boy, but it was years later he realised that he wanted to fly aircrafts. After finishing school, he took up Physics at St Joseph's College, Trichi, but towards the end he was dissatisfied. When he discovered aeronautical engineering, he regretted having lost three precious years.
